IGNOU is the oldest distance-learning university in India. Since its inception in 1985, it has been consistent in its quality of education. They emphasize Inclusive education to create a knowledge society that is open to all.

It was the first university to attempt to raise the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) by providing top-notch instruction via the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) modality. 

With 4,528 students, the University launched its first academic programs in 1987: A diploma in Management and a Diploma in Distance Education. Through a network of 67 regional centers, 2,667 learner support centers, 21 Schools of Studies, and 29 abroad partner universities, it now meets the educational needs of almost 3 million students in India and other countries. 

The main goal is to increase access for all societal groups, and marginalized sections and to offer ongoing professional development and training to all economic sectors. In order to deliver education, the university makes use of a range of media and cutting-edge technology. 

It emphasizes the development of interactive multimedia and online learning within the framework of blended learning. The institution provides courses for full-time, online, and distance learning.
